Biography:
Zhu Bajie, also known as Pigsy, is a prominent character in the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. He first appears in chapter eight of the novel.
Originally a celestial marshal named Tianpeng, Zhu Bajie was banished to the mortal realm and transformed into a pig-demon as punishment for his lecherous behavior towards the moon goddess Chang'e. This transformation gives him his pig-like features and insatiable appetite.
He is recruited by the Bodhisattva Guanyin to become a disciple of the Tang Monk, Sanzang, and accompany him on his pilgrimage to retrieve Buddhist scriptures from the West. His role is often comedic, marked by his laziness, gluttony, and lust. Despite his flaws, Zhu Bajie provides valuable strength and aid to the group, often wielding a nine-toothed rake as his weapon.
